• Clients:

  • NYC Public Schools

Dr. Cohen, in his role as consultant to New York City Mayor Giuliani and Chancellor Levy, conducted a groundbreaking needs assessment post-9/11.

Design and Methodology:

- 100 schools

- Grades 4-12

- Approximately 900 students per grade

- Total N=8,000 students

Findings:

A significant percentage (up to 25%) of the New York City Public School Children were identified as at-risk for eight major mental health disorders including anxiety and PTSD.

Strategic Solution:

In an unprecedented display of cooperation, agencies, educators and mental health providers all came together to collectively implement therapeutic interventions. As opposed to subjective observation, these interventions were — for the first time in this field — based on scientific mental health needs assessments and data.

  • For the first time, a needs assessment took into account psychological and physical proximity to the 9/11 attacks.
