This blog includes trends on kids movies, television and books for June 2012. Looking at box office trends, Madagascar 3, Mirror Mirror, and Dr. Seuss’ the Lorax were in the top three G and PG rated films the weekend of June 10. Some PG-13 movies that appeared in the Top 20 were Men In Black III, Marvel’s the Avengers, the Hunger Games, and Moonrise Kingdom. In terms of TV ratings Disney Channel was number one and Nickelodeon was number two among kid viewers ages two through eleven.
The Top Books for June from the New York Times children’s bestsellers list included: The Top 3 chapter books: Middle School: Get Me Out of Here by James Patterson and Chris Tebbets, Insurgent by Veronica Roth, and The Fault in Our Starsby John Green. The Top 3 picture books: Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin, Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker and Tom Lichtenheld, and Dinosaur Pet by Marc Sedaka. The Top selling paperbacks are One Direction: Dare to Dream by the Members of the One Direction, Divergent by Veronica Roth, and The book Thief by Markus Zusak. The Top series were The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordon, and The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott.
An important thing to consider is that the same stories appear in different forms of media. Three books have movie adaptations currently in theatres: The Lorax, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, and The Hunger Games.
